Before the Russian Revolution, Kazakhs in Russia were known as "Kirghiz-Kazaks" or simply "Kirghiz" (and the Kyrgyzes as "Kara-Kirghiz").[2] This practice continued into the early Soviet period, and thus the Kirghiz ASSR was a national republic for Kazakhs.
